I agree. Esterbrook, Wahl, Mabie Tod and several others are excellent pens that are still easily found and in some cases undervalued. Fountain pens like watches have found a mainstream following only in the last twenty years and there are certainly some names that command higher prices than others because of their current "luxury" status (i.e. Montblanc, Rolex etc.). The great thing about FPs and watches is that vintage is often times better than what is produced today since they were made in smaller quantities and with greater care and quality control. I recently got my hands on a Pilot Murex which was made in Japan back in the 70's and I would suggest to Pilot that they look hard back at their archives to see how pens should be made (and that was only 40 years ago). It is always great to hear someone who loves their FPs. Don't get me wrong, I love my modern gadgets, but nothing beats pen and paper.

Excellent. I'll leave the "guy thing" alone since that was already covered in Tamara's comment so long ago. :)

I just wish, since you briefly touched on vintage pens, that you'd mentioned Esterbrook which, like Parker 21s and aerometric Parker 51s, can still be found in the wild and on ebay in working order, without needing to be restored first. That's one heck of a pen, IMO. Love mine. :)

Great post! But, I must say, as a female who LOVES fountain pens, that it's not just 'a guy thing.' Many ladies enjoy a finely crafted pen, too, and they don't have to be pink or sparkly to make us want them ;-)

A very nice post! I've linked to it on my Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/pages/His-Nibscom/7863934... so that other fountain pen fans can have an enjoyable read. I *would* like to impress all with my S. T. Dupont 007 pen set, if I ever acquired one, but it would be tough to sneak past 'Her Nibs', who still doesn't understand why I need anything more than a Bic Stic. :-)

And it kills me because they have access to some magnificent pens that I can only dream of and have no appreciation for that nib gliding across proper paper! Actually it is interesting you mention Fountain Pen Hospital because I have gotten my best deals there. They are great guys who know their stuff, but their hours just kill me because working during the day and with no weekend hours I can almost never get down there. Luckily, as you point out in your post, there are accessible fountain pens that are exquisite instruments with just the right weight and polish, ink flow etc. that give you that spiritual writing experience that others mock :)

Excellent job. I glad you mentioned this post after you read mine.

Too few understand, I agree - and thank goodness I don't live in your neck of the woods. I would have been "socially inappropriate" vis-a-vis some jerk Wall Streeter by now. Pens as mere fashion accessories! Good day, sir. I said, "Good day"!
