Italy is a wonderful country that unfortunately like the U.S. and many other countries has fallen ever more steadily into the steely grip of politicians and banks. As politicians fight for pieces of the pie (the average salary is 22,000 Euro gross pay per month plus all the usual perks) and banks dig deeper into people's pockets for whatever loose change is left, the commoners (especially the dwindling middle class) is asked to shoulder the burden of their excesses. Italy's middle class cannot evade taxes like the super wealthy and the government goes to those they know cannot hide and forces them to bear the brunt of the tax increase needed to "save the economy". Add that to Euro-zone speculation that does not help sovereign debt and the economy inevitably stagnates. Italians, luckily, are savers and do not have personal debt (they do not lease and banks will grudgingly give you 20% of the value of a home for a mortgage). This is their saving grace and for now they have their savings to dip into. When that money is gone I really do not know what will happen. The wonderful meals and beautiful women will appease people for only so long. I could rant forever because my Italian half is passionate about Italy, but I'll keep it for another post :)

Italy used to be my favorite country to visit. I hear it's not quite the same as the economy has frayed nerves...but I don't know. I actually made two television shows there and had the time of my life each time. EVERY day I had incredible meals...and, Oh, those Italian girls!
