How to Get Water Out of Your Phone

If your phone has become wet and you don’t know how to get water out of it, there are some things you can do. Some of these unconventional methods might work, but it could take days or weeks and might even let particles and rice insects enter the port. So, these should definitely be on your list of “do-nots.”

Have you dropped your phone in water? Don’t panic because we want you to know that you can try and save your phone. There are a couple things you can do right now so that your phone doesn’t die. When getting water out of your phone, try these things first:

Instant oatmeal

Rather than throwing away your wet phone, try using an instant oatmeal-soaked cloth to dry it out. Compared to regular rolled oats, instant oatmeal is more absorbent, but it might still leave small crumbs on the phone’s components. If you don’t have instant oatmeal, regular oats are a fine substitute. Be sure to choose one with a low glycemic index, as steel-cut oats aren’t as absorbent as instant oatmeal.

Silica gel

You’ve probably seen those little packets of silica gel that come with your new shoes or handbag. It’s an extremely porous substance with millions of microscopic holes that absorb water and moisture. And if your phone gets wet, silica gel is your best friend. It can be applied directly to the phone outside, and even used to dry the inside. Just make sure to put it somewhere dry, such as a briefcase or bag of food.

Desiccants

In case your cell phone is soaked in water, the easiest way to get it dry is to use a desiccant. Silica gel packets are a great alternative to rice as they absorb moisture from the interior of the cell phone. If you can’t find desiccants online, you can pick them up from hardware stores. Silica gel is available in blue crystalline form and turns light pink when it absorbs moisture. If you can’t find it, try heating it up to make it blue again.

Apps

When your iPhone gets wet, the first thing you should do is turn up the volume. The water will start ejecting and the sound will return. You should also wipe the speaker’s exterior with a dry cotton cloth. Several apps exist to remove water from your phone. One of these apps is Sonic, which is free and available on the App Store. The following are other popular apps to remove water from your iPhone.

Using a lint-free microfiber cloth

Before you wipe your smartphone with a lint-free micro-fiber cloth, make sure you first remove any dust and debris that might get stuck to the phone’s exterior. If you’ve spilled something on your phone, be sure to wipe off any debris that might get stuck to the phone’s surface. To do this, use a cloth that’s dampened with water. You can even use a cotton swab dipped in alcohol to wipe off any dust that may have gotten into the phone’s body.
